Fashion, automobiles, and home construction … what do these all have in common?
On the surface, you might think ‘nothing’, but here’s the answer: trends. As time goes by, all of these industries, and others, experience changes in what’s popular and what meets the needs of the modern consumer.
Design Elements for 2020
As 2020 approaches, let’s take a look at what home remodeling and construction design elements experts are expecting to see in the New Year.
1. Bead Board (out), Shiplap and Subway Tile (in)
We’ve already begun to see this trend, but expect to see more of it next year. Homeowners are starting to prefer the wide, industrial look of shiplap over the narrower, country feel of bead board, especially in the kitchen. Shiplap with a natural wood finish is gaining popularity, both for the walls and the ceiling. Look for crisp, white subway tile to compliment the shiplap and top off the design.
2. Gold and Black Finishing Touches
We’ll continue to see the popular brash finishes on kitchen and bathroom fixtures, but a new style is emerging that is expected to take off in 2020 – brushed gold finishes, complimented by black. The contrast between the two makes the overall design feel luxurious and look beautiful.
3. Kitchen Islands – Blue or Natural Wood
This is one kitchen design element that isn’t changing a great deal. Blue islands, including shades of navy and gray, will continue to be popular, as they have been for the last few years. Note 2020 hanging strong with the classic blue, as Pantone named Classic Blue as the color of the year for 2020. You will be seeing a lot more of this blue, possibly even gracing upper cabinets in kitchen design.
Natural wood islands, however, are also predicted to gain in popularity.
4. Geometric Patterns
Gone are the days of just using a different paint color to provide accents to a room. Now, more than ever, expect to see geometric patterns, both on walls and on the floor. Wallpaper with geometric designs, as well as mosaic tile flooring, really add pizazz and a feeling of adventure!
5. Painted Bathtubs
Here’s a new way to add a pop of color to your bathroom. Homeowners can now choose from a variety of freestanding bathtub styles, plus choose the color of the outside paneling!
6. Caning Returns
The New Year is expected to bring the return of caned chairs, which were extremely popular in eras gone by. We’ll also see caning on other fixtures including custom cabinet faces and headboards.
So, there you have it – a little peek into the crystal ball of 2020’s design trends. Whether each element proves to be as popular as predicted, only time will tell. In the meantime, let’s get started on designing your dream home!
