The annual Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) recently drew thousands of professionals to Chicago’s McCormick Place, the site of the largest event in the industry. Many of the trends noticed by designers reflect what we are seeing here at Sea Pointe Construction. It’s true that the California kitchen and bath market is a leader influencing the rest of the country.
Trends that are currently being supported in the market include:
Dark and rich finishes to cabinetry (in keeping with the high contrast trend). Cherry is the wood species that takes dark stains well and therefore is a leading choice among designers.
The classic polished chrome has made a resurgence since it pairs so well with high contrast design, fits in many design styles (vintage, transitional, contemporary, etc.). Also it is a high value finish that allows remodeling homeowners to splurge elsewhere.
Glass backsplashes are everywhere! Besides adding sparkle to a room and adding depth and dimension, the variety of glass available allows homeowners to reflect their own style. Glass tiles, stone and glass mosaic mixes and full sheet back-painted glass panels are top of list for updating kitchens and baths.
Contemporary design styles are making advances in previously traditional markets. Traditional homes are incorporating contemporary design elements to create the transitional look while previous transitional styles are being updated to livable contemporary.
More contemporary toned tiles are being favored during bath remodels. The plank tile has quickly replaced the standard square tile as a preference and the classic chiseled edge, stone-look tile is getting hard to find as it’s been replaced by rectified edge tiles that can be set without grout being part of the look.Computer aided tile manufacturing has taken leaps forward with a larger variety of finishes that realistically suggest another material like fabric, wood, metals and rare stones.
Universal Design is a strong trend getting more popular.Bathroom design trends closely mirror those for kitchen. More and more homeowners requested adaptable and universal design features, including dam less showers and hand showers. The open plan or great room that has been a staple for kitchen remodels has started to translate into bathrooms making the spaces more efficient, and opening by losing full and partial walls.
Kitchens are continuing to operate as the electronic hub of the home, with computer stations and recharging areas for electronic devices growing in popularity. The U-Socket Wall Outlet with built-in USB ports was named one of the Best of KBIS It’s a great idea isn’t it?

Andrew Shore was quoted in Qualified Remodeler and For Residential Pros commenting on the remodeling design workshops Sea Pointe Construction organizes and hosts throughout the year. Each month the design/build firm holds a ‘Remodeling 101′ educational seminar in a different city within Orange County, Calif. The workshops help homeowners to understand key design and construction basics before starting their dream kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel, room addition or whole home refresh. The workshops are also meant to encourage guests’ to think outside-the-box by displaying creative ideas, in addition to showcasing some of the firm’s remodeling projects before and after pictures.
According to Shore, the workshops typically draw around 50 attendees, although some have attracted as many as 90 or more. There also is a residual effect, he adds. Over the next six to 18 months, we will continue to receive calls from past attendees.”

Remodeling can be a big and costly step, how do you know if you’re hiring the right contractor?
In these days of terrorism, confusion and mistrust even daily decisions require extra thought. All of us want to make decisions that we know are right, especially when we are spending our hard-earned money! We all feel better when a friend or relative gives us a referral to a specific trades person or company that has done work for them with excellent results. It helps relieve the stressful pressures associated with making a wrong or poor decision. When hiring a contractor an informed decision is always the best. All legal contractors should be listed with the Contractors Licensing Boar which holds the contractor liable for work they perform. The contractor needs to be covered with Liability Insurance as well as Workers Compensation Insurance which protects the homeowner in the event of an injury occurring on their property. Finally, check references to assure the performance & quality of the work completed.
Here at Sea Pointe, approximately 65% of our entire business is based on personal referrals from past clientele, most of whom are happy to show off their new kitchen and bath to our prospective clients! Our clients are particularly happy with our project management. It is comforting to have one person in charge of coordinating the project, scheduling the work, & answering questions.
Of all the jobs we have sold this year, over 30% were sold directly to our previous customers! That says a lot for our company and our hard working dedicated staff! We are so happy when you refer us to your friends and relatives! If your referrals decide to use Sea Pointe for their new remodel, we would like to show our appreciation and say ˜Thank You’ by sending you out to dinner on us! Just tell your referral to mention your name.
Would you like to take a hot shower for as long as you desire? There is now an alternative to the standard, bulky water heater with its insulated tank: tankless heaters, which produce hot water only when needed. Some advantages are that they’re relatively small and can deliver an endless supply of hot water quickly & inexpensively. Tankless units can also reduce energy costs because they only heat water when you need it. The number of faucets & water-dependent appliances along with how you use them helps determine the size of the unit you will need. Your Sea Pointe salesperson can help you select the unit that’s right for you!
